10 Tips for a More Mindful & Healthful 2019

Forget the resolutions. Try one or more of these tips to make your life healthier and happier in the New year.


We all know the drill. I’m going to start this…I’m going to lose that….I’m going to do this..I’m going to do that…and we start off great and highly motivated and then life gets in the way.

I personally have a very long list of things I want to accomplish and it can be very overwhelming if I allow it to be.

So here are 10 simple ways you can improve your health and outlook on life in 2019.

#1: Just start

The quickest way to start anything is to just start.

Stop thinking about it and just start. It might not be easy, in fact it will probably be hard. But that is exactly why it is worthwhile.

Why does it have to be January 1? I’m not waiting for tomorrow, or next week, next month or next year. I am starting Now. Today. This minute. This moment. And you should to.

#2: Start Small

It can be overwhelming whether trying to lose weight or train for an event. So try and set small goals such as getting in your daily steps, drinking your 8 glasses of water or just going for a 20 min walk. Make them manageable goals to try and hit them each and every day. Mark them on a calendar and check ✔️it off. Keep a journal. Then look back in 30 days to see what you have achieved. Then do it again with a new goal. Small steps = equal big results over time.

#3: Get Moving

That is the only way to stay healthy and fit and it only takes a few minutes a day. Instead of going through the drive thru at #starbucks. Park your car 🚗 and go inside. Park a few spots away from the front of the building; take the stairs; take a break at work and walk your hallways. Anything and everything to get moving. Every day.

#4: Smile & Laugh

Smile for no reason even if it is just with your eyes. Did you know that smiling improves your mood, reduces stress, lowers your blood pressure, boosts your immune system and could possibly increase your life span? So smile more. And while you are at it – try to be more kind everyday and laugh more frequently. Smiles are free. Laughing is free. Fill up your bank and those of others with these and your day (and possibly your life) will be so much better.

#5: Take the Time to Reflect Challenges can be overcome. Pain will lessen. Heartbreak will heal. So remember to do the following:

  • Always prepare ourselves for more difficult times.
  • Always accept what we’re unable to change.
  • Always manage our expectations.
  • Always persevere.
  • Always learn to love our fate and what happens to us.
  • Always protect our inner self, retreat into ourselves.
  • Always submit to a greater, larger cause.
  • Always remind ourselves of our own mortality

#6: Stop Being So hard on Yourself

Stop measuring yourself against others. Stop the self defeating language. Stop beating yourself up because you went off plan or did not get that workout in. Stop attacking yourself. Stop insulting yourself. Stop selling yourself short. You are more capable than you think. If you keep saying I can’t – than you never will.

Progress requires you to unlearn bad habits.. . Becoming the best version of yourself requires you to change your beliefs. . . Decide the type of person you want to be and prove it to yourself with small wins.

If nothing changes; nothing will change.

#7: Practice Patience

According to the dictionary, patience is the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset.

Patience takes practice. And each and every time you find yourself getting annoyed, stop for a moment and ask yourself- what does getting angry accomplish? Absolutely nothing. Spend your energy on more worthwhile things. Laugh. Smile. Move on.

#8: Engage with Others

Life gets busy and we are often preoccupied by our own needs/desires. I am super guilty of this. Passing on opportunities because I’m too tired or have to much to do, etc. And sometimes that is the right choice. But having people to share in both the highs and lows of your life is invaluable to your happiness.

If someone you know has been going through difficult times, reach out. Meet for coffee. Go visit them. Send them a card. Send them a text. Call. Anything. But let them know you are there. Ask how they are doing. Listen. Love. Hug and smile.

I’m a writer of pen to paper. I love to send cards and notes to say hi and thank you. You may call me old school but this is one of the ways I try to stay connected in a more personal and thoughtful fashion. When I receive a card, I know that someone took time to purposefully think about me and for that I am grateful. Even though writing cards and notes can be time consuming-consider it an opportunity to slow down, gather your thoughts and let someone know you are thinking about them.

The human connection is invaluable to our happiness.

#9: Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

I’ve been in mine too long. Sure I try new things from time to time, but it has been a while when I took a big risk to see if I could swim (rather than sink). . For 2019, I plan to go way out of my comfort zone. I plan to challenge myself in ways I haven’t done in years. But more importantly I want to grow, learn new skills, try new things. . Success is not just about what you have done. It’s about what you inspire others to do. . Get comfortable being uncomfortable.

#10: Take Some Downtime

Take the time to recharge and relax. I have a huge ‘to-do’ list waiting for me, but I know it’s important to take some time to just hang out. Read a book ( or two). Take the time to slow down. Breathe. Enjoy the quietness and the sound of the rain falling. Watch a movie you’ve been waiting to see. Take a nap 💤.

You might also have to just say No occasionally. By saying No, you recognize your own limits. Accept this. It’s not the end of the world but rather an opening to other opportunities. Despite everything you might have to do-take some time for you.

Look at 2019 as an opportunity to improve and grow. I hope these simple tips and reminders will help you reach your full and healthful potential.
